How Does The Writer’s Strike Affect The Music Industry?

Picketers during the WGA strike.

Ever since the writers strike started in early May, we have seen significant losses in film, but how does it affect the music industry?

On May 2nd of 2023, the Writers Guild of America began their strike for a fairer and higher pay, as well as the disposition of the use of artificial intelligence. Shortly after on July 14th, the American actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA began their strike for better pay and adjustments to residuals. Now you may be wondering, how does this affect the music industry?

Many songwriters have chosen to show their support for the WGA after their strike began. This could mean that the artists that depend on writers, could be left without one. In this case they would have to either hire a brand new songwriter who could shift their style, or forced to pay more to have them written. This could be problematic for artists who rely on new releases to generate income and maintain their fan base.

This can also be problematic, as movies and tv shows use songs in the background. Since production has stopped, many artists have seen a loss of pay as their music is no longer being used in this medium. In addition to this, they are also left with less promotions for new releases, as many popular talk shows have halted as well.

It is clear that the artists and songwriters could be affected, but what about the rest of the workers in this industry? In addition to the positions above, the strike can also impact producers and people who rely on royalties from new releases. Which can hinder the success from new and up-coming producers and for other roles.

The strike can have a significant impact on the music industry. It can lead to a shortage of new songs, and result in a loss of income for songwriters and producers. Strikes are important for creators to demand better working conditions and fair compensation. It's important to realize the impact that strikes can have on other industries as well.
